We've spent the past few days on Fraser Island, situated about 300 kilometers north of Brisbane. Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world and a must go to destination for those wishing to enjoy off-road trails and beach driving. Only 4x4 vehicles are used on the island which is famous for it's 75 kilometer long eastern beach. Although there are a few camping sites, which you can pay to stay at, they are mainly used by backpackers who come in organised groups for a few days. Those that come in their own vehicles camp wild in one of the many areas situated along the shoreline or in one or two bush camping sites set back into the islands interior and surrounded by thick woodland areas. We boarded a ferry to take us across to the island, which took forty-five minutes to make the crossing to the western side. From the ferry dock we drove across the island to the eastern side along rutted sand tracks, emerging onto a perfect beach of golden sand. The island is home to a large number of wild Dingoes and other animals which are protected, although beach fishing is a very popular activity on the island. We were lucky enough to see a large, black 2 foot long lizard shortly after arriving and during our stay saw a number of Dingoes, one or two coming within a meter or two of our camp. Dingoes can be dangerous and we were careful to keep our food and rubbish inside the car, especially overnight. Over the three days we were on the island we drove over three hundred kilometers, enjoying beautiful beach runs, soft sandy inland tracks and visits to a couple of the islands largest lakes. One of the lakes, Lake Mackenzie, was stunning. With no incoming or outgoing water the lake is formed solely by rainwater. The fresh water is crystal clear and felt warm as we enjoyed a refreshing swim. All too soon our time on the island was up. We took the ferry back to the mainland before heading into Brisbane to meet up with one of Niki's friends for lunch, which we enjoyed at the famous Breakfast Creek Hotel. We had driven 2600 kilometers for the round trip from Sydney plus the 300 kilometers on Fraser Island itself. A long way for just a few days, but thats Australia, distances are huge and we will cover many more kilometers before we finish our Australian adventure.
