We set off from Cape Town in beautiful sunshine full of anticipation of what was to come over the next couple of months.
The Toyota Hilux 4x4 we’d hired was easy to drive as we drove through the outskirts of Cape Town on the first real day of our adventure. Friends had suggested camping in Paternoster for our first night but the only campsite had little in the way of shelter from the wind that was now blowing hard as well as no real facilities we decided to keep going hoping to find something better further along the road. We found a super camp called Elandsbaai Camping around 6pm and booked in. Feeling a little tired after the hectic weekend with our friends we were happy to relax, cook dinner on the braai (barbecue) and enjoy some excellent South African wine. Niki unfortunately was suffering from laryngitis so we stayed in Elandsbaai for two nights, relaxing and sunbathing in the 31C sunshine, hoping she would feel better after a days rest. With Niki still not 100% our next two nights were spent in Langebaan at the Leentjieskilp campsite, another great camping spot. We had been told of a campsite at a hot springs, it sounded interesting but when we arrived the site was fully booked. A little disappointed we backtracked a few kilometres to a site we had passed. The gate was closed but not locked and we drove in. The lady owner came to meet us telling us that the site was actually closed until the following week, we were in the low season as far as camping was concerned), however she kindly allowed us to stay, we set up camp in a superb spot under a tree on a wonderful grassy area. After five days on the road enjoying amazing scenery, wonderful campsites and friendly people we were settling into the adventure we had been looking forward to for a long time. Namibia was somewhere I had wanted to visit for years and we were getting ever closer to the border, but South Africa kept us for another couple of nights in Springbok where we found another great campsite. Springbok Caravan Park was situated a kilometre from the town centre making it a convenient stopover to stock up on supplies and get information on Namibia from the excellent tourist office. In the campsite we met a South African couple with a superb 4x4 rig they had converted themselves, they were really friendly and gave us lots of info on places to visit and stay during our time in Namibia. We had only spent one week on the road in South Africa but it seemed much longer, we had seen so much, this adventure was proving to be something special already.
