I took advantage of a hot shower and charged up all my electronics before leaving Menaggio. I took the quieter roads through to Lugano in Switzerland, enjoying the scenery and hot sunshine as I made my way back towards England. I was unsure whether to go via Germany or France, in the end I went up to Bad Bellingen in Germany, where I parked up for the night. The following morning I continued up to Karlsruhe and popped into "Gast Motorhomes" hoping to pick up a Camping Gas bottle, which they didn't have, unfortunately. While there I looked around the new and second hand campers and motorhomes, all way over my budget, although a new Possel Fiat based van conversion had me thinking. Back on the road I made the decision to cross into France where I knew I could find plenty of motorhome aires, which are mainly free, and hopefully get my gas bottle. I arrived at the Thaon-les-Vosges aire in the late afternoon, its one of my favourites, being free and in super location. It was pretty full but I managed to find a small spot and settled down, thinking I would spend a couple of days there. The weather was brilliant, hot sunshine from a clear sky, Over the next couple of days I relaxed, took walks and took advantage of the beautiful weather, it wasn't to last however as on my third night the temperature dropped the sky turned a dirty shade of grey and the heavens opened. The storm went on for most of the night. The morning dawned with little change, the rain still falling intermittently, time to move on. I found an aire in one of my guides that I hadn't been to before, the guide said it was free and had free electric, I went to find out. The aire at Richardmemil was quite small, only four official places, but although I was number four another four campers turned up later in the afternoon. Being one of the first four I had the advantage of the free electric, a bonus. The weather hadn't improved overnight, in fact it felt chilly. A few days ago I was sitting in beautiful sunshine sunbathing, yesterday I had jeans and a fleece on, it could have been autumn time. So after a free night with electric I moved on again to Pont-a-Mousson a large aire with a riverside location having all the facilities, including hot showers. The weather had picked up a little by the time I arrived and I took a walk along the river, returning for a hot shower and an early dinner. The aire has Wi-Fi and I managed to book a ferry for Saturday evening from Calais to Dover, fingers crossed there are no problems with the migrants around the Calais area.
It seems I've been travelling all my life. For the past eight years I've been following a simple, nomadic lifestyle, living and traveling full time in a camper van and meeting with other like minded travellers.
