The dream of a South African trip has become a reality. After traveling through both North and West Africa the South and East have always been high on the bucket list of trips to do.
I had originally thought of shipping my own camper van to Port Elizabeth and spending an extended period in traveling through the southern countries and possible up to Kenya and Tanzania. The costs involved are pretty high and the fact that Niki can only come for a maximum of two to three months meant that I would be doing a lot on my own. On a trip like this it is always better if you can share the experience with someone else. There are places that I particularly want to see and of course Niki has her favorites as well and in order to see these places means traveling on tracks rather than tarmac, so in the end our plans changed. We have booked one way tickets to Cape Town for the first week in January and I've organized a fully equipped Toyota Land Cruiser for the duration hoping to spend January, February and March on tour before booking return flights home. Overall I think it will work out better and somewhat cheaper. Although we will be going back to basics, camping using a roof-top tent and living outdoors, Niki and I have taken many trips such as this in our own expedition Land Rover in the past, so it will be nothing new.
So with just a matter of weeks before we set off I be busy studying the maps and guide books so we can pack in as much as possible. We can't wait and are really excited about visiting the wide open spaces and game reserves hoping to see the "Big Five"as well as the multitude of other animals and birds that Africa is famed for.
It seems I've been travelling all my life. For the past eight years I've been following a simple, nomadic lifestyle, living and traveling full time in a camper van and meeting with other like minded travellers.
